Upcoming Observance of Farmworkers Day on March 31

Posted Date: 03/26/26 (07:13 PM)

Dear SUSD Families and Staff,

We want to share an important update regarding the upcoming March 31 observance.

Today, the State of California announced a significant change. Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation officially renaming César Chávez Day as Farmworkers Day. This new designation shifts the focus to honoring the broader farmworkers’ movement and the many individuals who have contributed to advancing civil rights and dignity for workers across generations.

In Soledad USD, this change is especially meaningful given our community’s deep connection to agriculture and the contributions of farmworker families. As we move forward, our schools will align with this new statewide observance by focusing on:

  • The history and impact of the farmworkers’ movement
  • The collective contributions of leaders such as Dolores Huerta, Larry Itliong, and countless others
  • The values of respect, perseverance, and advocacy for human dignity
As always, our priority remains creating safe, supportive, and respectful learning environments for all students. We recognize that recent news and changes may bring up questions or emotions, and we encourage families to reach out to their school if support is needed.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping us honor our community’s history in a thoughtful and inclusive way.

Sincerely,
Randy Bangs
Superintendent
